<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Air Rifle Scopes Can Increase Accuracy
Whereas firearms kick just once, air rifles kick twice with each shot, once forward and once backward. This is caused by the back-and-forth motion of the gun's mainspring when triggered. Therefore, a special scope, designed specifically for an air rifle, is necessary to ensure a high level of accuracy.
On the Other: They're Not Mandatory
Shooters who prefer to challenge themselves, have very keen vision or are shooting just for fun don't necessarily require air rifle scopes. In addition, some gun makers manufacture precision air rifles that don't require scopes to be accurate. These guns depend on standard aiming sights instead.
Bottom Line
Air rifle scopes allow for pinpoint accuracy, so they're highly desirable for competition, hunting and other activities requiring precision shooting. A scope is not strictly necessary, however, for purely recreational shooting or for those who relish a challenge. Please note that ordinary rifle scopes should not be used with air rifles because the recoil can damage them.
