The NYSE represents the largest stock exchange in the world. The 2008 combined market capitalization of all listed companies totaled $9.209 trillion.
NASDAQ
Nasdaq represents the third largest stock exchange. (Tokyo claims the No. 2 spot.) In 2008, the combined market cap for all companies listed on Nasdaq totaled $2.396 trillion.
Share trading value
In 2008, the Nasdaq market surpassed the NYSE in share trading value. The value of stocks traded on Nasdaq reached $36.446 trillion while the value of NYSE stocks totaled $33.639 trillion.
Exchange Traded Funds
The NYSE and Nasdaq markets also led the world in the value of exchange traded funds (ETF) during 2008. NYSE figures reached $6.822 trillion and Nasdaq numbers totaled $1.907 trillion.
Investment flow
In 2008, the NYSE also led the world in terms of funds raised by initial public offerings. The NYSE had $280 billion of new funds flow through the exchange.
