There are many kinds of migraines that can create extreme discomfort, and one is the optical or ocular migraine. These migraines can strike with little warning.
Opitcal Migraine
Optical migraines are those that occur around the eyes. They manifest themselves as a small, expanding blind spot in the middle of your field of vision. Optical migraines can be extremely painful.
Causes
Stress, menstrual activity, alcohol, chocolate, aged cheese, milk, foods with mono sodium glutamate and sunlight may cause ocular migraines.
Symptoms
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and double vision. Hallucinations such as sparks or flashes of light can also occur.
Treatments
Optical migraines often go away on their own after half an hour or so, but they can often last several hours or more. Sometimes, they recur repeatedly.
Misdiagnosis
If you are suffering from persistent vision problems and symptoms similar to ocular migraines, you may actually be suffering from a detached retina. See your doctor immediately if the pain and vision problems increase in intensity or if new, more severe symptoms appear.
