  • There are many different types of monkeys, but despite the belief of some, the chimpanzee is more like an ape. Monkeys and apes have a few specific traits that make them different from each other.

    Tails

The clearest distinction between the two animals is that monkeys have tails and chimpanzees do not.

    Size

Most chimpanzees are bigger than monkeys. Monkeys can vary in size, though, but they are usually smaller than chimps.

    Nasal Openings

Chimps have shorter noses than monkeys. The nasal opening of a monkey is slanted, and the nasal openings of chimps are rounded.

    Relation to Humans

Chimpanzees are the closest animal relative to the human being. They both walk on two legs, whereas monkeys are quadrupeds.

    Other Differences

Most monkeys don't live past 30 years, and chimps regularly live beyond 40 years of age. A chimp's brain is also much bigger.
