  • RAM, which stands for random access memory, is an essential aspect of a computer. It is what provides memory and power to a computer. A computer with a higher RAM will store more information and process it more quickly. Knowing the amount of RAM your computer has will help you determine which programs you have space for. It is simple to find out the RAM on any system. Follow the steps below and look for the numbers followed by "MB" or "GB" to find the RAM.

    Windows XP

Click on the "Start" menu in the bottom left-hand side of the screen. Choose "Settings," then "Control Panel. Select "System," then choose the tab that reads "General" at the top of the menu. Look at the bottom of the page to find the total RAM of your system.

    Windows Vista

Click on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen. Choose the "Control Panel," then click on "System and Maintenance." Choose "System." Click on "Memory" to view your computer's RAM.

    Mac

Click on the Apple menu at the top left-hand side of the screen. Click on the "About" tab. Find the RAM by looking at the figure across from the "Total Memory" line.

    Current RAM usage

Knowing how much potential RAM your computer has is helpful, but it can also be good to know how much RAM your computer is using at any given time. To do this in Windows, right-click on the space bar and choose "Task Manager." Click on "Performance," to view your current RAM usage. If you are using a Mac, you can view how much RAM you are using by opening the "Applications" folder. Next, choose "Utilities" and click on the "Activity Monitor." Click on the "System Memory" button to see how much RAM you are using.
