  • MP3 players come in all shapes and sizes. For many minimalists and exercise enthusiasts, the iPod Shuffle is the music player of choice with a simple format and slim size that make the Shuffle one of the easiest to use portable music players on the market. The Shuffle comes fully functional right out of the box. Downloading music onto the iPod Shuffle is the only task Apple leaves up to the customer.

    Hardware Connection

Unlike the other members of the iPod family, the Shuffle must use a specially designed USB-dock to connect to a computer. The Shuffle is unable to house a USB port on the actual MP3 player because of its small size. Instead, it connects via the the head-phone jack that is located on the top of the device.

    Software Connection

The iPod Shuffle utilizes the iTunes software that is either included with the player or can be downloaded for free from the Apple website. Once the software is installed on the computer, plug the iPod dock into the USB slot on the side of the computer. Once the Shuffle is recognized by the operating system, the iTunes software should automatically open in the browser. A prompt box will appear asking if "you would like to sync the iPod Shuffle with your iTunes library." If music files are already in the iTunes library, select the "Erase and Sync" Option; this will automatically download music files onto the Shuffle up to the allowed capacity. If there are no music files on the computer that the iTunes library can locate, then there are a number of options to quickly and legally purchase music that can be downloaded onto the Shuffle. The easiest and quickest option is to use the iTunes store. On the left side of the iTunes window, select the iTunes store feature. Before music can be purchased for download, an iTunes account must be set-up that requires a Credit or Debit Card, an iTunes Gift Card or even a PayPal account for payment purposes. Once an account is linked to the computer, use the search bar on the iTunes store to download the desired music files directly into the iTunes library. The purchased music files will be downloaded onto the Shuffle the next time it is connected to the computer, or they can be transferred manually. To transfer the files manually, in the library screen, click and hold on the desired MP3 file or song and drag it onto the iPod shuffle folder located on the left side of the iTunes page (directly below the store feature). The songs will then be downloaded onto the iPod shuffle.

    Disconnecting

It is important to disconnect the Shuffle properly to ensure that the files will be saved onto the device. Before physically removing the dock from the computer, disconnect the Shuffle from the iTunes software by clicking the eject button located next to the devices folder (directly below the iTunes Store feature). Once the Shuffle disappears from the devices menu of the iTunes screen, it can be safely removed from the dock and is ready for listening.
