Zegerid and Prilosec are brand names for a generic acid inhibitor. Both began as prescription drugs and are now available over the counter. Prilosec has been on the market longer than Zegerid.
Active Ingredients
Prilosec contains omeprazole. Zegerid is also omeprazole but has added sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
Dosage
Prilosec is available in 10, 20 or 40 mg strength. If you have the lower strength and need to double the dosage, take two capsules. Zegerid is available in 20 and 40 mg; however, you cannot simply take two pills if you need a stronger dose because this also doubles the bicarbonate. You will need the 40mg pill, according to RxList.com.
Effectiveness
Omeprazole has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of acid reflux and other digestive diseases. It can take some time to take effect, so the addition of bicarbonate in Zegerid is to provide immediate relief.
Side Effects
Both medications are considered safe if used as directed. According to RxList.com, no deleterious effects were found in any major body system. No studies have been done for use longer than 12 months.
Considerations
Since Zegerid was only recently released for OTC sale, it may be more expensive than Prilosec. Generic and store brand omeprazole is usually even less expensive.
