Many computer users struggle with a balance of computer hardware and software as they work to optimize their machine's processing power. Random Access Memory, also known as RAM, can increase the speed at which a computer accesses data, speeding overall system performance.
Purpose
RAM, sometimes known simply as "memory," gives a computer a temporary place to store files and program information while the file or program is in use.
Function
RAM uses special integrated circuits, transistors and capacitors to create an easily accessible location where computers can store and quickly access in-use files. Because RAM plugs directly into the computer's motherboard, few obstacles impede the flow of data between RAM and the computer's processor.
Size
The ideal amount or RAM varies from machine to machine depending on what the computer is used for, the number of files the user accesses at the same time, and the type of files the user opens.
Considerations
If a user does not have sufficient RAM, it must write open program files to the machine's hard drive. The slower speed of the hard drive interface, and of the drive itself, slows system performance as the computer attempts to retrieve file data.
