  • Water stains can be caused by a number of things. Leaving a wet cloth or item of clothing on top of the chair, for example, can cause a water stain. Or maybe you spilled something you were drinking or made the mistake of trying to clean the chair upholstery with a wet cloth. Water stains are difficult to remove, but it can be done with work and patience.

    Act Quickly

If at all possible, try to attack the problem while the area is still wet. Using a clean paper towel, blot the area repeatedly to absorb as much moisture as you can. Sprinkle baking soda on top to absorb any remaining liquid as well as to clean the area. Even if the area is already dry and the stain has set in, try putting some baking soda on top of the upholstery and brush gently with a soft-bristled brush. This can help loosen the stain and reduce its appearance. If you are working on the back of the chair (rather than the seat), lay the chair down on the floor so the baking soda will stay where it is placed. Make sure you try products and techniques on the back of the chair first. This is in case the upholstery does not react well to the cleaning solution or the fabric "bleeds" (colors run when wet). Let the area dry as well, so you can see what it looks like and whether you can live with the same look on the front of the chair.

    Keep in Mind

Before you try any cleaning method, look for a mark under the chair or near the corner seam of the upholstery for a printed or stamped letter. You should find one of these letters--W, S, SW or X. These letters indicate how you should be cleaning the upholstery and will help you determine your next move. "W" means water may be used, and while you should not be pouring water directly on the chair, you can mix some water and vinegar inside a spray bottle and spray it directly on the stain. Let it stay and then blot it dry with a paper towel or cloth. "S" means no water, so you should look for a specialty cleaner that can be used on upholstery. "SW" means both water and no water are acceptable. "X" refers to vacuum only, which means you will need a professional's help to get rid of the stain and that you might even need to replace the upholstery. If the upholstery can be cleaned with water, try the vinegar mix suggested before.
