Stretch marks are scar tissue that forms when the skin is stretched too quickly, usually due to rapid weight gain from pregnancy, bodybuilding or adolescence. Although painless, many are eager to get rid of these unsightly patterns. While exfoliates, such as baking soda and oatmeal, will not "heal" stretch marks completely, they can be effective in reducing the appearance of stretch marks because they remove dead skin cells and leave skin fresh. Be sure to moisturize the area afterward to prevent drying.

On the Other: Prevention Is More Effective

Beauty experts recommend preventing stretch marks by moisturizing the skin with natural oils in order to improve its elasticity. Creams made from shea or cocoa butter, vitamins A, E, and C, and aloe vera have all been used to prevent stretch marks. Using a mentholated vapor rub may also help. However, some may be genetically predisposed to forming stretch marks and may not be able to prevent them completely.

    Bottom Line

Surgery is the only proven, albeit costly, way to completely and permanently remove stretch marks. Medical options for treating stretch marks include tummy tucks, laser treatments and micro dermabrasion.
