  • Peter Carl Goldmark invented the LP, or long playing record, in 1948. The revolution speed was reduced from 78 revolutions per minute, or rpm, to 33-1/3 rpm. Record sizes decreased in two ways. Records held a longer audio program, and the move from shellac to vinyl decreased weight.
