Help answer this question below.
1. My hair is originally black but once I made it blond. A teacher said in my face, 'You know, blond is dumb.' I didn't said anything back because I think that's a stupid remark although six years later I still remember that s--t. You can't tell someone's stupid or not by the color of their hair or their skin.
2. I was a leader in an English-speaking movement in my university. A teacher said, 'Hey, don't encourage people to use English in this university. This is not America.' I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make a fuss out of it. But still four years later it's stiil stuck in my head. I find it disgusting for anyone to say anything like that. I was an English student so encouraging other English students to actually use the language (and later other students) made sense. But people accused me of being an arrogant, unpatriotic snob. With this attitude even in a reputable university, no wonder we're still lag behind.
The stupidest thing I ever heard a professor say was the English professor who quoted a line that had been popular ten years before "the economy is so bad that none of you have any hope of ever owning your own home." It was stupid on so many levels when it was popular in the eighties, because the economy is an ever changing thing and in the lifetime of any person there will be many cycles of boom and bust. And even if that weren't true, there is never a case where there is absolutely no hope. But by the time he said it to my class, in the mid-nineties, interest rates were way down, we were in a boom cycle and everyone was buying houses. I wish I'd have the nerve to raise my hand and ask him if he thought the economy was worse than it had been in the mid to late thirties when my grandparents bought their first home, But really, it begged the question of why an English professor was trying to teach us economics when frankly, he wasn't even doing a very good job of the Canterbury Tales.
You are all idiots!
I am 70 years old now but I will never forget hearing those words from a professor of music long ago. The class consisted of about 30 students and it was a music appreciation course required of all who were seeking a bachelors degree (except music majors) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
After making this statement he gave an assignment and then dismissed class - stomping off in a blind rage.
The remark was stupid (not smart) because I imagine that at least 5 of the class members were not idiots. They were just too damned immature to recognize the benefits of taking that class.
After having taught college science for 41 years I look back upon that professor's remark and can't say that I blame him for being upset. He was working hard to present the material to a bunch of disinterested and generally disrespectful "kids" who should have gone out and spent some time struggling in the real world before taking up his valuable time.
Oh sure, he got paid for it and very well for that time - but he must have put in hours and hours trying to figure out how to make it most rewarding for us and most of us were nothing but bumps on a log.
