Epilepsy, a disorder characterized by seizures, is a rare disorder that can sometimes strike cats. However, epilepsy can be kept under control with anti-seizure medication.
Identification
The most commonly used medication for seizures in cats is called phenobarbital. Phenobarbital is an effective way to control epilepsy, according to Arnold Plotnick, MS, DVM, ACVIM, ABVP.
Barbituate
Phenobarbital is a barbituate, a type of drug that depresses the central nervous system. It is also used in humans with epilepsy.
Time Frame
Phenobarbital can take two to four weeks before its effects are known. After this period a blood test is usually conducted to check levels of the drug in the blood.
Safety
Though generally considered safe, phenobarbital can make cats lethargic, hungry and thirsty. It can also cause them trouble with coordination.
Alternatives
If your cat does not respond to phenobarbital or shows adverse reactions, Valium can be tried as an alternative. According to Plotnick, 20 percent of cats with seizures on Valium show very little response to the medication.
