  • Is your child complaining of ringing ears? This can be a very common occurrence that will go away by itself. There are many possible causes.

    Common Causes

Common causes of ringing ears (tinnitus) in children are exposure to loud noise, earwax blockage and injury. If it doesn't go away after a few hours, take your child to the doctor.

    Loud Noise

Single-event loud noises (like a rock concert) can cause ringing ears and will usually go away in a day. Prolonged exposure to loud noise (like listening to earphones too loud for months) can cause permanent hearing damage.

    Ear Wax Blockage

Improper ear cleaning or other bad habits can push the wax back into the ear canal and cause it to become impacted. The results can be tinnitus or other hearing problems.

    Injury

If the ear ringing is related to a head or neck injury, it can be more serious. Usually, injury causes ringing in one ear.

    Considerations

Most of the time, ear ringing goes away by itself after a short time. Monitor your child to make sure it goes away. Visiting a doctor is always the best first step.
