High performance engine chips, when properly installed and modulated, will increase an engine's horsepower. In some instances, these chips will also increase the fuel economy in a car, saving gas as well as producing more power.
On the Other: They're expensive and hard to install
Many of these high performance chips are difficult for a layman to install in a vehicle. Many people will have to go to a professional mechanic to install them, which will add cost to the already expensive chip system.
Bottom Line
If the increased horsepower and fuel economy is worth it to you, then a high performance engine chip is worth the price. It won't pay off in savings, however, unless you intend to keep the car for some time.
