Though there are seven different types of face piece respirators that offer particulate filtering, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health-approved 3M N95 respirator models are the most common and among the least expensive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that N95 masks (including, but not limited to the ones manufactured by 3M) are able to filter out airborne particles with a 95 percent success rate despite not being able to effectively filter out oil.

On the Other: Some Experts Point out Shortcomings

A 2003 Washington Post article points out that--though they are somewhat effective for filtering out common allergens and even particles like anthrax spores--N95 masks, regardless of brand, are too flimsy for standing up to chemical or nuclear attacks. Because they don't fit snugly over the nose and mouth, the respirators are unable to offer thorough protection in such instances.

    Bottom Line

Depending on what job is being asked of them, 3M N95 face piece respirators can be a cost-effective way of protecting the respiratory system. They function well in day-to-day settings, but aren't a reliable option for thoroughly filtering out chemicals, gases or oil.
