  • For many years Kodak has been a popular name in the world of printers, scanners, cameras and other pieces of electronic gear. Kodak printers and scanners are widely used in the business world, and the photo printers the company makes have long been favorites for both professional photographers and digital photography enthusiasts. For the most part these printers can provide years of trouble-free service as long as they are properly maintained, but it is important to know how to troubleshoot common problems, including paper jams.

    Check Paper

One of the most often overlooked sources of paper jams is the quality of the paper itself. Many people spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a printer, only to turn around and buy the cheapest paper they can find. This can be an extremely short sighted way to save money, since the excessive dust from that low-quality paper can accumulate in the printer and cause all sorts of problems. Excessive moisture in the paper can also cause the individual sheets of paper to stick together, causing jams as the paper is picked up from the tray. If you notice that your Kodak printer is picking up two, three or more sheets of paper at a time, print quality and/or excessive moisture could be to blame. To combat excessive moisture store your paper in a heated area instead of an unheated storage room or garage. If quality is a problem try choosing a better brand of paper.

    Check Paper Trays

If your Kodak printer has more than one paper tray, it is important to isolate the paper jam problem by pulling out all of the trays and trying them one at a time. In most cases you will find that the paper jam is isolated to a specific tray, and the most likely problem is worn-out printer rollers. After you have isolated the paper jam to a particular tray, pull that tray out of the printer by pulling it up and lifting it up at the same time. Set the tray aside and look inside the printer to locate the rollers. Feel the rollers--they should have a rough texture. If the rollers are worn smooth, pull them off their prongs and slide new rollers on until they click into place. Then replace the tray and send a test print to the printer.

    Check for Torn Paper

If all of the misfed paper has been removed from the printer but subsequent print jobs continue to jam, the most likely cause is a torn piece of paper remaining in the printer. It is easy to inadvertently tear a piece of paper as it is being removed from the printer, so be sure to examine the paper path carefully to find any small pieces of paper. You may need to use a flashlight to find the paper, and a pair of tweezers to remove it. Just make sure you do not touch any of the metal parts of the printer with the tweezers--this could damage the electronic components of the Kodak printer.
