  • For unique outdoor lighting, natural gas fixtures are an interesting alternative to traditional electric lights. The units are available in a wide variety of styles and they may be fashioned from a host of different metals. Unlike electric lights, they will still provide illumination even if you experience a power failure.

    Post Mounted Lanterns

One of the most popular types of gas lights are post mounted lanterns. If you wish to emulate the gas lanterns found along the streets of the French Quarter in old New Orleans, this type fixture. The units feature a single open flame and may constructed of copper, brass or aluminum. According to the American Gas Association, gas streetlamps were first installed in Baltimore in 1816. Adding one or more to your yard could definitely create a historic atmosphere. This might be particularly desirable if your home is an older style Greek Revival or Queen Anne. If you would prefer a more modern look, natural gas-powered post lights are also available with mantle-type burners. These units may have one, two or even three inverted mantles. For an added touch of elegance, you might also wish to install a fancy brass finial atop your fixture.

    Wall-Mounted Lights

If your tastes run in a slightly different direction, you might prefer-wall mounted gas lights. You could install a pair on the stone posts flanking a driveway or mount a matching pair on opposite sides of the front entryway. Like the post-mounted models, these units are also available in the same materials and flame options. For a more unusual look, consider a wall-mounted light, which is suspended from a yoke bracket. Like their post-mounted counterparts, these units can also be equipped with an optional electronic ignition system. Another gas-light option is pedestal-type models. These could be installed atop your masonry driveway posts.

    Gas Torches

To emulate the look of a tropical island, install one or more gas torches. These units feature a large open flame and are available in several different styles. They can also be equipped with either electronic or manual ignition systems. A pair flanking a patio or deck would provide both illumination and foster an informal atmosphere.

    Additional Considerations

Any outdoor gas lighting fixtures will require underground gas lines. They should be set well below the frost line. Have them installed by a qualified plumber or a local gas-light dealer if you choose to purchase them there. Many gas utilities also sell and install gas lighting. Gas lights throw off a large amount of heat. Be sure to install them where small children cannot reach them.
