Because the body manufactures cholesterol, there is no RDA, or recommended daily allowance, for it. The American Heart Association recommends a maximum of 300 mg per day (200 for people with heart disease). "Because saturated fat and cholesterol provide no known beneficial role in preventing chronic diseases, they are not required at any level in the diet," says a 2002 report from the National Academies' Institute of Medicine.
