  • Consumers and electronics manufacturers are quickly adopting HDMI as the standard connection. As of 2008, 230 million devices contain HDMI compatibility. Several different HMDI cable types exist, with differences in price and features.

    Types

Two different kinds of HDMI cables exist: the standard version, called category 1 and high-speed, called category 2. In addition, HDMI cables vary in length up to 10 feet.

    Features

The standard HDMI cable operates at 75 megahertz or 2.25 gigabytes per second. The high-speed version transfers data at a rate of 340 megahertz per second, or 10.2 gigabytes per second.

    Version Numbers

As of 2009, there are four different versions of the HDMI cable. A consumer may use any version of HDMI with their electronics, but versions 1.2 and below are slower and lack several features of 1.3 and 1.4 cables.

    Tips

The HDMI producers association recommends that users purchase the latest HDMI version ("1.4" as of 2009). The 1.4 version offers high speed data transfer rates for maximum picture and sound quality and can transmit information over the Internet.

    Does Brand Name Matter

HDMI cable prices vary drastically between name brands, such as Monster and generic cables, but name brands may not provide much of a quality upgrade, if any at all, to justify the cost, Popular Mechanics believes.
