<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Sylvan Has Helped Numerous Struggling Students
With more than 1,100 locations across the United States, Sylvan Learning Centers are popular for a reason; their teachers go through a multi-step screening process and their curriculum is continually being tested and built upon. In 1995, students who participated in Sylvan-based supplemental education in Baltimore showed gains of approximately 11.6 percent in math and 3.2 percent in reading on standardized tests.
On the Other: It Depends on the Student and Teacher
There have been numerous complaints lodged against Sylvan, often from parents of children with dyslexia or ADHD. If the right student and teacher aren't paired, little improvement is made. Another complaint that has arisen is that some parents don't feel their children get as much personalized attention at Sylvan as they would from one-on-one tutoring.
Bottom Line
Because there are so many Sylvan Learning Centers, it's best to research the specific Center you're considering. If you choose to send a child to Sylvan, know that there are several teachers at each Center, and that some might be better than others.
