<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Clicker Training is Effective
Clicker training trains dogs to associate rewards with a specific action, marked by the "click" sound, clearing up the confusion involved in other training techniques. Dogs soon intentionally perform the action to obtain the reward, learning more quickly and easily than those learning through habit.
On the Other: Clicker Training Can Lead to Dependence on Treats
Because clicker training is reward-based, many dog owners have difficulty weaning their dogs off the rewards, in order for them to obey without a treat. Many trainers fail to teach owners non-treat forms of rewards, such as verbal affirmation, which can be just as effective and yet more convenient in the long run.
Bottom Line
If taught correctly, clicker training can be highly effective. Dogs trained through the clicker method learn quickly, with behaviors that are intentional rather than habitual. With proper instruction, any dog owner can effectively use clicker training.
