  • This might sound gross, but the best way we found to do it was to put newspaper down in one room, such as the laundry or bathroom (where the floor is linoleum) and keep the cat inside at night in this room. Once we discovered where he seemed to be doing his business, we left the litterbox there the next night, and soon he was using it. Then we moved the litterbox out of the laundry and put it somewhere more suitable.
  • Has she used one before do you know? Where is she doing her business if not in the tray? If she is going outside, leave her to it, it's less mess for you to clean up. If she is going inside your house, put the tray where she is doing it. Also, try putting her in the tray and then getting hold of one of her front legs and dig. This sounds stupid but it worked with mine, they get the message that they can dig in the box. Cats are naturally very clean animals, and will always try to bury their poo, so they prefer to do it in a tray rather than on the floor, where they can't cover it up.
  • Cats are naturally clean animals. They dont squat where they sleep. That being said the cat is 5 months old and needs to know where the box is at. Like stated before, lock it up in the bathroom at night but put the litter box in as well as the newspaper.
  • Try "baiting" the litter with a few drops of ammonia. Urine contains ammonia. The theory goes like this. The cat will think its urine from another animal, and will begin to try to "mark" the spot as their own by urinating there themselves. Eventually they will start using the box for all their needs. I have no idea whether the reasoning behind the theory is sound, but I do know from personal experience the technique works very well. I'm not guaranteeing success with every cat, but I've done this with many cats with a lot of success. It's worked for almost every one of them.
  • Have you placed the cat and the litter box in a small area so there is not much choice as to using the box? We pick a small room like a bath or laundry room to acclimate the kitty and do our training. If there is rally only one good place for it to choose from, like one or two boxes with different types of litter, then the cat will usually choose one. After a few days, open the door and let the cat out to roam the rest of the house, placing it back in when you aren't around. Soon the cat will get used to the box and will use it. If you need the box in a different place you can scoot it a little each day to get it to the spot you want, whole having another box in the location you like or some other place, too.
  • Confine her to a bathroom with food litter toys, she'll start to do it by instinct. Keep it clean is the main thing!Good luck, Leanna
  • Be sure to not have the liter box near her food. Also DO NOT let the cat outside and finally, if there are dogs in the house..keep the box somewhat hidden.
