  • It's no secret that high cholesterol causes health risks such as heart disease. If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, major lifestyle changes are necessary in order to reduce your levels of "bad" (LDL) cholesterol and have a healthier body. When battling high cholesterol, diet is the first---and perhaps easiest---area in which you can make positive progress.

    Animal Fats and Cholesterol

Know the sources of cholesterol to craft your optimal, healthier diet. Animal fats are one of the main sources of cholesterol. By avoiding certain foods that contain animal fats, you can significantly lower your cholesterol. Foods to avoid include butter, cream, dairy products containing whole milk, cream cheese, ice cream, organ meats, goose, duck and shellfish. Whenever possible, substitute traditional dairy products with alternative, soy-based products.

    Fats and Cholesterol

Consumption of high amounts of LDL (bad) saturated fats also plays a role in high cholesterol. Ideally, no more than 7 percent of the calories you take in on a daily basis should come from saturated fats. Saturated fats are found in veal, poultry, beef, egg yolks, dairy products that contain whole milk, butter, baked goods, coconuts, coconut oil and processed meats such as bologna, sausage, salami and hot dogs. Avoid or strictly limit these foods if you need to lower your cholesterol. It's also beneficial to read food-ingredient labels while shopping. Many foods labels list the percentage of saturated fats that are found in that particular food item. Trans fats also play a role in raising cholesterol levels. Not only do these fats raise your body's LDL, or bad cholesterol levels, but they also lower HDL, or good cholesterol levels. Foods that contain high amounts of trans fats include fried foods, processed foods, margarine, baked goods and snack foods. You can also spot foods that are high in trans fat by reading food-ingredient labels. Avoid anything that says "partially hydrogenated" or "hydrogenated," as the item contains trans fats.
