Highway patrol officers are responsible for ensuring transportation safety on state and interstate roadways. A typical day may include patrolling a section of highway and enforcing traffic laws.

Duties

Duties of a highway patrol officer on a typical day include issuing traffic citations, directing traffic and enforcing detours in construction or vehicle accident situations. In small towns and rural areas, officers may also work with local police in crime investigation.

Other Functions

Highway patrol officers are also responsible for monitoring damage to state roadways and signage. They may conduct road evaluations after natural disasters. In addition, state highway officers conduct training and education for the community on road safety.

Equipment

Highway patrol officers use either an automobile or motorcycle depending on local requirements. As with other branches of law enforcement, members of the highway patrol are trained to carry a gun, baton or Taser to subdue criminals when necessary.

Fun Fact

The 1970s television drama CHiPs glamorized the daily routine of a pair of California Highway Patrol officers. Most episodes ended with a climactic car chase on a Southern California freeway.
