  • Automotive insurance is a legal requirement if a person is going to be driving a car. However, many people don't entirely understand just what it is that their policy does and doesn't cover until the damage has been done. This is especially true for people who have "comprehensive" insurance.

    Collision

Collision insurance is often mistaken for comprehensive insurance. Collision insurance covers damage that happens to your car as a result of a vehicular collision or traffic accident.

    Comprehensive

Comprehensive auto insurance is sometimes called "other than collision" insurance. Generally speaking, comprehensive insurance covers damage that occurs to your vehicle that isn't a result of an accident.

    Examples

Comprehensive auto insurance would cover damages resulting from vandalism, theft, fire, acts of God and collisions with animals. Each policy is different, but these are general categories.

    Exclusions

Comprehensive insurance won't cover damage from things, such as a lack of maintenance on your vehicle or medical expenses for driver or passengers.

    Premiums

If you have comprehensive auto insurance in addition to collision insurance, you will have a separate premium for each policy.
