Depends on what type of clock you are talking about. Sundials have been around for about 5000 years. Water clocks have been around for more than 3000 years. So I guess that clocks were indeed around during the time of Caesar... http://www.arcytech.org/java/clock/clock_history.html

I think I know what you are getting at. And if I'm wrong, then disregard this. In Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar," a clock chimes in the background, although it hadn't been invented yet. That's a literary tool called an anachronism. The clock is used simply as a tool for moving the story along, although it is impossible to have happened. For all I know, the chime was also sort of a wink to the audience, a little inside joke that they were in on but the characters weren't.
