Frankincense, gold and myrrh are popular at Christmastime because of their Biblical significance. They were brought as gifts to the baby Jesus by the Three Kings (Wise Men/Magi). Several ideas exist as to what each gift symbolizes.
History
Frankincense and myrrh originated in the Arabian Peninsula. Gold has been used for centuries as a decorative metal as well as a means of monetary exchange.
Spiritual Significance
Frankincense is burned in temples and is representative of the kingdom of God. Gold represents the riches of earth and also signifies royalty. Myrrh is an ointment and is used to anoint those into the kingdom of God at temple.

Frankincense and myrrh are often mentioned in the Old Testament. The story of the Three Kings is told in the Gospel of Matthew.

Frankincense and myrrh are collected as resin from small shrubs.
Uses
Frankincense and myrrh have been used to heal physical ailments since ancient times. Frankincense is often used as incense. Myrrh was used in the Egyptian embalming process.
