<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Recognized Benefits
Activated charcoal, also called activated carbon, is used in many water purification systems and it is a major player in poison control, according to the MSDS Hyper Glossary. Hospitals use it in cases of poisoning because of its powerful absorptive and adsorptive qualities. Filtration devices using this substance are based on the same principle and are considered both effective and safe, at the levels of exposure recommended by product packaging.
On the Other: Use with Care
Consumers should be aware of the difference between regular charcoal and activated charcoal. Regular charcoal products contain organic matter and chemicals that are not considered safe for human consumption. Even activated charcoal should only be used under a doctor's supervision or recommendation or according to package instructions, in the case of filtration devices.
Bottom Line
Activated charcoal should only be used internally in cases of accidental poisoning at a doctor's recommendation. Consumers should replace charcoal filters if they become damaged or excessively worn in order to avoid unnecessary exposure to activated carbon.
