The immigration process involves legal procedures for the naturalization of foreign nationals who wish to become U.S. citizens.
Visas
Obtaining a visa is the first step in the process of immigration. Visas are official documentation that allows an individual to enter a country legally. In the immigration process, foreign nationals or aliens need sponsorship to obtain a visa.
Sponsorship
Family and employers are usually the primary sponsors for foreign nationals and aliens in the immigration process. Family sponsors must be U.S. citizens or a legal permanent resident, and employer sponsors must prove that there are insufficient qualified U.S. workers to meet their employment needs.
Asylum
A foreign national who cannot return home due to threat of life or persecution because of various social, political and religious factors can accept asylum in the U.S. as part of the immigration process.
Timeframe
According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, it should take up to six months to become a citizen. The reality is that due to bureaucracy, the process normally last a lot longer.
Green Cards
Permanent residency is proven by the use a green card. Once an individual receives a green card, he can legally live and work in the U.S.
