Significance
A friendship ring is a reminder of the deep relationship that the two parties share. It symbolizes a bond so strong that the two people consider each other as close as siblings.

One popular friendship ring, the Irish" Claddagh," has "two hands holding a heart which is crowned ,ideally symbolizing love and pairs, though in recent times they have various interpretations associated with them" according to the website "MyDearValentine."
Distinguishing Features
Friendship rings often have a simple design, to distinguish themfrom engagement and wedding rings. Some people wear them on their pinkie fingers to further avoid confusion.
Age
A person of any age can give or receive a friendship ring, but the practice is mostly done by young people. It would not be necessary for a young child to have the word "friend" engraved on the ring, because that type of relationship is assumed.
