  • Herpes is a very common sexually transmitted disease. It is characterized by periodic outbreaks of painful sores. Many Americans have herpes, so an understanding of its spread is important to preventing infection.

    Definition

Herpes is a virus. There are two strains of herpes: Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 is responsible for cold sores and HSV-2 is responsible for the more serious genital herpes.

    Statistics

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 1 out of every 5 adolescents and adults carries the herpes virus.

    Symptoms

Many people with herpes show no symptoms at all, but those who do have symptoms will often experience inflamed, itchy skin and blister-like sores that open before scabbing over and healing. During the first outbreak an infected person may also experience flu-like symptoms.

    Transmission

Skin to skin contact can spread herpes. Areas with mucus membranes such as the mouth, throat, and vagina are particularly prone areas. The virus spreads most easily when open sores are present but it can also be spread when no symptoms are present. Herpes can also be spread from an infected mother to her child during childbirth.

    Prevention

The best way to prevent the spread of herpes is to abstain from sexual activity. If this is impractical, a condom can also reduce the risk of spreading herpes.
