You are to design the next election/voting system. How would you design a voting machine, or voting method, that everyone could trust?

Everyone is required to cut off his or her left hand and mail it to the candidate they want to win. The candidate with the most hands wins.

Tamper-proof machines are already in existence--we don't need to design new ones. Since the Republicans can't be trusted (after fixing at least one, if not two presidential elections), it is imperative that the new voting machines be used. They are already designed, ready to go, but the Republicans have disallowed them to be used. Gee, I wonder why?!

If it were something like a club of 20, and we're voting for a President of the club, a simple show of hands would do. If you're talking about a country of 300,000,000 than the current system works about as good as it could. You'll never, ever be able to invent anything or adopt a procedure or you name it that 300,000,000 will all agree on. Never.
