Debate still continues over whether or not CD's or cassettes are superior. However, as of 2009, while CD's and CD players are a commonplace item both at stores and households, cassettes and cassette players are becoming increasingly rare.
History
CD players were created in order to play compact discs, which are storage devices. Audio CD's are read by the CD player and the data in the CD instructs the CD player on how to play music through the speakers on the player.
Tracks
CD's have the ability to have tracks written into them. These tracks often separate the CD into different songs. With tracks, the listener can quickly skip through different songs. CD's also do not have to be rewound.
Data Transfer
Since CD's are digital, the data stored on the CD can be transferred to another CD or to a computer without any loss in the data quality. Cassettes, on the other hand, experienced a deterioration in quality when rerecorded.
Wear and Tear
CD's do not come into contact with a magnetic playback head like the cassette, which causes them to experience no wear and tear if taken care of.
Expense
CD's are cheaper than cassettes to produce, allowing the price of CD production to be lower.
