As long as your laptop's fan works well, it's safe to keep your laptop on all the time. A laptop computer can overheat if it's left on too long and the fan doesn't do its job. However, most newer models will power off automatically if the temperature gets too high. You can also leave the laptop plugged in without harming the battery.

    On the Other: Take Precautions

If you do leave your laptop on constantly, program it to enter sleep/hibernation mode after a few minutes of idleness to save energy. At the very least, make sure a screensaver is activated to avoid your desktop image getting burned onto the screen. You can also use a laptop cooler if your computer seems to be getting hot. Try to keep the computer on a flat, hard surface.

    Bottom Line

If you're not going to be using your computer for a day or so, consider shutting it off simply for the environmental benefits. But if you use your laptop frequently, there's no need to shut it off between uses; simply activate sleep mode instead.
