If the word half is used with an action verb like listening or turning is the whole word hyphenated? Like half turning or half listening?

    I would say 'no'. You hyphenate compound adjectives - 'half-ripened fruit',
    'half-baked idea'. But in the phrase 'I was half listening', the word 'half' is the descriptive word. The only time you would hyphenate, IMO, is in a phrase like 'the half-listening man' or 'the half-turning figure'.

    Those of us at my house say yes, they would be hyphenated: half-turning, half-listening.
