Glockenspiel in a traditional sense is like a mini, metal xylophone that you hold with one arm and play (with a plastic or brass mallet) with the other. Most orchestral composers refer to orchestra bells are glockenspiel- if that's what you're talking about, they are place on a stand or table and played using both hands with mallets (plastic is most common, though brass can be used) The orchestra bells are generally 2.5 octaves in range, though professional models can be much, much larger.
