Question

Help answer this question below.

A .rtf file I regularly update seems to be becoming corrupt. Usually saving the file is no problem, but occasionally every character in the file changes to a box [] or a character-space. What's going on?

.rtf, or Rich Text Format, has special characters to indicate a change in the attributes of the text. It is much like HTML. As I have no indication of the hardware/software specs, assuming this is PC, you might examine whether a file called ANSI.SYS is damaged. This is old school DOS kind of thing, but it is supplied with Windows XP, so there may be legacy dependencies to this system file.

Also, it is important to check (again assuming Windows) the file associations - some gypsy program (perhaps written in India?) stole the .rtf extension and reassociated it. Log onto support.microsoft.com to learn how to reassociate, (or unassociate) the file extension.
