Why are blu-ray and dvds being sold together? I can't see why you would want the blu-ray disc and the dvd of the same movie.

You might have multiple TVs in the house... some with only DVD players, and only one with a Blu Ray player. Having both would allow you to watch the movie anywhere in the house, and would make it so they only have to ship one product packaging, which also reduces the chance that someone will buy the wrong type and have to bring it back to the store for exchange. The physical media costs very little to manufacture, so their profit margin is still high even while shipping both types of disk.
