  • That's not nearly as bad, in my opinion, as political hacks being known as "leaders".
  • Respect is earned not given, regardless of educational status. That's not saying you don't address a MD as Doctor or a PHD as one they both earned it academically but, the second they become condescending is the second they lose my respect.
  • "MD" stands for Medical Doctor ... which can be earned by a person with a PHD ....
  • In context of thier science, PhDs are widely called "doctor". It is very common and perfectly Ok. I agree that calling PhDs "doctor" out of the sceintific/academic context may sound pretentious. Generally, MD's have more social respect to the title, as somebody who save health and lives, but as nicely said in other answer "respect is earned, not given".
  • Then don't go to Italy. In Italy it is now legal to call every graduate of a 3 year college program roughly equal to the American Bachelor of Arts degree "Dottore" or Doctor. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/18/world/europe/18iht-titles.html
  • I sincerely doubt you'd feel that way if you had earned yours. My brother earned his PhD in mathematics at the age of 30 - his title is well deserved.
