Urban's initial reaction was as a response to Alexius of Constantinople's request for military aid. Whether Urban simply over-reacted is hard to say but certainly Alexius did not intend for a huge Christian army to land on his doorstep. . Urban probably saw the goal of liberating the holy city from the hands of the Muslims as a righteous one and it also had the additional benefitof getting rid of a load of the most dangerous knights and nobles of Europe and setting them on the Middle Eastern Muslims rather than each other or indeed on himself.
