Badly treated considering who he was to them at the time. However, he did have the misfortune of falling in love with and having a high profile affair with a very prominent citizen's son. I can't remember who the prominent citizen was but it was someone who could and did destroy him.

I always think it odd that Oscar Wilde is revered as a gay martyr. Sadly, at the end of his life he regretted his lifestyle, wrote De Profundis in jail and after being released converted to the Roman Catholic Church on his deathbed. (He was originally from a rich and famous Protestant Dublin family.) "Three more months go over and my mother dies. No one knew how deeply I loved and honoured her. Her death was terrible to me; but I, once a lord of language, have no words in which to express my anguish and my shame. She and my father had bequeathed me a name they had made noble and honoured, not merely in literature, art, archaeology, and science, but in the public history of my own country, in its evolution as a nation. I had disgraced that name eternally. I had made it a low by-word among low people. I had dragged it through the very mire. I had given it to brutes that they might make it brutal, and to fools that they might turn it into a synonym for folly." - quote from De Profundis

I think Oscar Wilde was somewhat a tortured genius. He was born before his time. ( One of my literary heroes).
