  • In Latvian, Polish, and the Slavic languages in general there are no words corresponding to a, an, or the. I am currently teaching two Polish women English and they have great difficulty with these words because of the lack of equivalents in their native language.
  • In Arabic there is no word, or at least there wasn't until recently, for "democracy".
  • I watched a documentary some time back, about a tribe with such a short life expectancy that they didn't have a word for "old."
  • In Persian there are no articles, definite or indefinite; no word that means either "he" or "she," just a gender-neutral pronoun, "Oo." Over half the Persian vocabulary is borrowed from other languages.
  • In Gaelic there is no work for "sex", and Russian does not have a word for "addiction"
  • Wow! How do Chinese propose? Will you marry me? Maybe.
