The United States says (November 2009) it has no plans to join a global treaty banning landmines as the American military believes it could not meet its security commitments without them. Your thoughts on this?

Every country in the world is entitled to take its own independent decision on matters of security. If alone all countries would learn to respect the integrity and sovereignty of other countries there would be much less of security related problems. The US stand on landmine ban treaty must be respected by all countries same as the US must respect the stands of other nations on similar issues.

Israel needs land mines in order to murder their numerous enemies. The United States is owned by Israel. Any more explanation required?

My thoughts.... I believe that while in some cases, landmine use may be necessary, it should be COMPULSORY for any country using landmines to keep a perfect record of all landmines used, and ALL of them should be removed/diffused after the conflict is over. Too many innocent civilians are killed or maimed by landmines left behind by lazy countries with lazy leaders.

I don't agree with it. The military believes in lots of many antiquated notions that it firmly believes it cannot do without.

There are millions of landmines in place, some from cluster bombs still kill children in Laos to the tune of 14 a day. We need to get invoved with what Lady Diana was doing and remove, Not spread more Bombies, like Israel did on Lebanon. There are dozens of sites that are unusable in Eastern Europe, Asia, The Middle East, Africa and more because of these things. Google Bombies. Hope nobody ever drops them here.

if I know politics the wording of the treaty is complex and probably restricts things it needn't. I do not believe the US abandons live mine fields as some military (and mercinary) groups might... I am guessing the wording of the treaty would probably ban even functional safe alternatives which are designed (and too expencive) to not be left behind.

Thus showing that the military, at least, have zero effective morality. If those weapons are morally acceptable, they need no excuse; if (as most believe) they are immoral, then they are saying that the end justifies the means and morality can go ignored. The South justified slavery on their economy would collapse without it. This is the same logic.

Landmines would be a lot safer if they blew up automatically at the end of a predetermined time. Then after they're not needed, they won't sit there waiting for an innocent child to come along. But I don't know how to build a four year fuse.
