I found an old check made to me from the gas company dated 2006. Can I deposit the check or do checks expire?

Most checks would probably not be honored *by a financial institution* after that long, but if you present the check to the issuer (the gas company, in this case), and convince them that it's bona fide, then they will more than likely issue you a new one. (If it's a particularly large check, or in any kind of dispute, say if your name or address has changed, then they may need some time to investigate it's authenticity, and verify that it hasn't already been cashed.)
