Somewhere in between? I think there's definitely some nefarious all powerful puppetmaster(s) at work but there's so much misinformation and skewed facts out there about the illuminati that it wouldn't surpise me any if the "Powers That Be" hasn't purposely manufactured and/or perpetuated this mythos as subterfuge.

Both. Fiction-writers and loony conspiracy theorists have had fun with the idea that world events are controlled by an evil secret society. This has done a lot to discredit the idea of groups manipulating events but the reality is that people in power do and have always formed alliances and clubs the purpose of which is to co-operate so that they can perpetuate the status quo (i.e. stay in power), eliminate competition between themselves (carve up the cake between themselves) and pass on power to their own kind (friends, family, club-members). The "Illuminati" probably does not exist as one "evil" entity but as various clubs and alliances existing within political and business sectors.
