Firstly, part of Turkey is on the European continent. However, I do not think we should be to exactly geographical about this. It is arguable whether Malta is on the European continent. Iceland, which is considering joining, is certainly not on the European continent: it is on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. We should be looking more at the volume of trade - considerable - and at the culture: a stable, democratic, secular state (whatever the religion its citizens may practice at home) with an attitude to law and order being made compatible with ours.
As to Obama: anybody can express an opinion, even give advice. But it is Europe's decision, as I am sure he knows. One friend can always advise another.
I am Turkish. I read this conjuncture as U.S.A. want to see Turkey besides west block against Russia, China, India, Iran as a energy corridor and an military ally too. 3rd War is close.
Does Norway share a greater cultural bond with Canada, its trans-Atlantic cousin; or Russia, its Arctic godfather?
