Help answer this question below.
Of course. It's called Nature Boy. It's old too. I love that song. I'll find it for you just a sec.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRcn2YXaHoo Nat King Cole recorded it in 1948 and it was supposedly written by a homeless man that Nat got wind of.
Nat King Cole and the song is called Nature Boy. (:
The song is Nature Boy. Nat King Cole did a famous version. Celine Dion did a version in her Las Vegas show when I saw it. Do not know who composed it.
Hey! I get to comment on one of my favorite songs.
I also use the "Greatest thing you'll ever learn......" line as my favorite quote of all time.

OK, what I'm about to say does not really negate what anybody has said. It's just more clarification as to who the song is about. I will try to keep this as brief as possible.
The song is about a man who goes by the name Gypsy Boots.
I first met him in 1975 when he visited Maharishi International University. [It's a credited university composed of 100% transcendental meditators]. I then ran into him many times in Southern California.
He MAY be somewhat autistic, but I never had that thought while talking to him. One thing is true. He is far from a "normal" person. Although it was hard to have a regular conversation with him, he was always coherent. He just wants to speak his wisdom, which is the higher Spiritual knowledge [not religious knowledge. Huge difference]. As indicated in the song, he did always talk about LOVE. Also as indicated in the song he was definitely not shy, at least in the 70s, 80s and 90s when I knew him.
The reason I met him so often was because he always gravitated towards places and people that would appreciate his wisdom. So one could run into him at popular health food stores or annual health conventions etc.
Since leaving S. Cal. 16 years ago, I have not seen him. At that time, he was healthy and highly energetic for any age let alone his advanced age, probably because he was 100% vegetarian [as I am].
OK I guess I've said enough. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me.

You're reading A tune is stuck in my head right now and the only lyrics I can recall is "There was a boy- a very strange enchanted boy." Does anyone know the song and who composed it?

Ah, Nat King Cole!
I heard it this afternoon but it was just instrumental. I could barely remember the words or who sang it.
Thanks so much Sharona :D

It's a goodie that's for sure.

I agree. It was supposedly composed by a homeless man? That's very interesting.

As far as what I read on you tube. Take it with a grain.

It's a beautiful and haunting song. However, the Wikipedia article doesn't say anything about a homeless man composing it. I'd be more inclined to believe Wiki than YouTube.

Never, ever believe Wiki. But you are right. I did not get this from a reliable source that I can attest to. It may just be a myth.

Nature Boy
ROSANNE: "Recently Adam was having a hard time rehearsing, they said well we'll just bring him out to do his piece. He was going to play this really beautiful sonata that he learned at the camp. I was outside with him because I didn't want him to disturb the other kids performing. And of course he got away from me, and ran up on stage. He took over the show. Told the orchestra what to do, told the deejay what to play. One of the songs that he sings when he performs is 'Nature Boy.' That Nat King Cole song. I don't know if you've heard it, but it was written by an autistic homeless man who annoyed Nat King Cole's manager until he played the song; they put it on the 'B' side of one of the 45s, and that became one of his biggest hits. They used to have to go under bridges to find him, to give him his royalties because he was absolutely autistic. I thought that would be an appropriate song for Adam. [SINGS] 'There was a boy, a very strange, enchanted boy. They say he wandered very far, very far over land and sea....A little shy, and sad of eye, but very wise is he....And then one day, one magic day, he passed my way, and as we spoke of many things, fools and kings, this he said to me. The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.'"
