We memorize verses and/or chapters that mean something to us. I think attempting to memorize the whole thing would be very difficult, close to impossible, especially with all the different translations and what not out there.

Just little bits and pieces, the few scraps and fragments of verse that make any sense at all.
-
The whole bible? No. Verses, Yes.

Only the parts that allows them to win an argument.

I think they only memorize the parts that supports their way of life. In other words the parts that are convenient for them.

It would be impossible to memorize so many contradictions.

Some memorize more than others. I don't know anyone who has memorized the whole thing. Some Christian denominations emphasize memorization more than others. The Catholic Church emphasizes knowing what the Holy Bible says and means over rote memorization. All Catholics are encouraged to read the Bible. The Catholic Church teaches: The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ,' by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. ‘Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.' We also all listen to the Word being proclaimed and explained in every Mass. In every Sunday Mass there are at least four Bible readings • First Reading - usually from the Old Testament • A Psalm is prayed by all • Second Reading - usually from a New Testament Epistle • Gospel Reading • then the priest bring them all together and helps us apply them to our lives in the homily Here is the website for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' Catholic Bible Institute which trains people to lead Bible studies: http://www.archdiocese.la/learning/ore/bible/index.html For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 131-133: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect1chpt2.shtml#131 With love in Christ.

It would be nice if more of them would actually read the whole thing, let alone memorize it. I have met more atheist and agnostics that have actually sat down and read the whole bible than Christians; although, I grant that is an extreemly biased sample.
