First, make sure to keep the ear dry. Ear drops containing an antibiotic may be used if the ear becomes infected. Usually, the eardrum heals on its own, but if it does not heal within 2 months, surgery to repair the eardrum (tympanoplasty) may be needed.

Pinch your nose, and shut your mouth tight. Now try to blow out of your mouth as hard as you can without letting any air out.

Popping IS the cure of pressure build up. Do you mean a burst eardrum?

If you are feeling pressure and your ear aches, then go to the pharmacy and purchase some ear drops. You might have excess earwax built up that is getting infected. Don't cram Q-tips into your ear because it will just push the earwax tighter into the ear (similar to packing a cannon with gunpowder.)

You can try performing the Valsalva maneuver to help pressurize the middle ear. You hold your nose shut, take a deep breath, close your mouth and try to blow--this directs the air into your Eustachian tubes. For pain, warm compreses on the ear often help.

Just today my ears were stopped up and I used the method (first time ever doing this) of holding your nose and keeping mouth shut and blowing. My left ear popped and got a pain that felt like a knife stabbing it. It has now been three hours and still have a severe pain in my ear. Not sure if I rupture something or not, but the pain is almost unbearable. Nothing helps; pain releivers, warm compress, nothing. I do not recommend you use this method, unless you want to take the chance of the worst sharp ear pain you've had in your life. Any suggestions to get me through the night would be great, but off to the doc tomorrow if no better.

It will heal on its own, can take 2 - 3 weeks or even longer - the problem is possible ear infection so antibiotics may be needed - the ear drum in a membrane of skin that is in front of the middle ear - it helps to sharpen up sound via vibrations. The severity of this peroration would be determined by the ENT doctor ( Ear , nose Throat specialist. cheers.
